Little things matter
Suppose there are lotus leaves on a lake and they double every day. If it takes 20 days to cover the whole lake, how many days does it take to cover half the lake? … 19 days. Sounds simple and easy. However, the interesting and creepy part is that on 17th day, only the tenth part of the lake will be covered and it’s hard to imagine that the lake will be fully covered in just 3 days!
Similarly, in our lives, our behavior and choices may seem insignificant at the moment, but have surprisingly greater effects if we stick to them consistently and do a little more every time. Impact may seem insignificant at the beginning, but as you reach the tipping point these little efforts combined together can create a profound change.
This is how nature works and favors consistency. When a bird start building its nests, initially it seems like a bunch of twigs and nothing more. As the time passes it grows rapidly and before you know the nest is already complete. One of the common trait of successful people, whether they are athletes, entrepreneurs, speakers etc., is consistency. They focus on very small steps like waking up early, being on time, small workout routines, and follow them consistently. These small things open up the realm of possibilities for them when they reach the point of inflection. From there, the growth is exponential.
This phenomenon is true for both good and bad behaviors and choices in life. Sometimes we hold on to something bad, believing that we are doing so little of those things that it does not matter. By the time we realize that the bad behavior is a problem, it already has started to have catastrophic effects on us and our lives. The small habits compound to become bigger, and take over our life.
The best part of this phenomenon is that you have to stick to something small. Sticking to smaller steps is easier than bringing drastic changes in life. What most people do is that they give up before reaching the tipping point as the impact may seem insignificant at the beginning. The trick is being steadfast and regular in our efforts and improvements.
